Abstract: Este estudo exploratório analisou como bibliotecários escolares no Brasil compreendem seu papel no desenvolvimento da competência informacional dos estudantes e se a noção de um programa formal de letramento informacional embasa sua prática. Os dados foram coletados de relatos de experiências dos bibliotecários, bem como entrevistas e grupo de discussão. Foram incluídos 28 bibliotecários, dos quais 14 são de escolas públicas e 14 de escolas privadas, de nove estados diferentes. Uma abordagem qualitativa interpretativa foi utilizada para analisar os dados do estudo. Os resultados do estudo mostram que o conceito de letramento informacional, como um conjunto de habilidades e atitudes a serem desenvolvidos através de um programa planejado, contínuo e seqüencial, não foi encontrado na prática destes bibliotecários. No entanto, um conjunto significativo de competências e atitudes que contribuem para tornar a biblioteca um lugar de aprendizagem foi encontrado. O estudo confirma que há um movimento em direção à prática do letramento informacional nas bibliotecas escolares brasileiras, mas os bibliotecários ainda precisam avançar em direção a ações coletivas e permanentes que caracterizam o conceito de letramento informacional.
